Top 5 Austin Sports Events for April 9-11

The top 5 things to do this weekend – April 9th to 11th – for the sports fan in your life:

#5 - The Opening of the Del Webb Sports Field at Sun City Texas

On Saturday, April 10th, the grand opening of the Del Webb Sports Field has the Sun City Softball Team facing off in an Inaugural Game against the Del Webb Home Runs. From 1pm to 3pm, you can enjoy the active adult lifestyle by delighting in free hot dogs and ice cream and touring the new amenities including Del Webb Field as well as the Bark Park. While in Sun City, be sure to stop in the model park for their free shuttle service to the event and to ask the Del Webb sales team about finding your future home.

#4 - The Texas Roller Derby Girls Roll into Action at the Palmer Event Center

On Saturday, April 10th, the Texas Roller Derby Girls come back into action for the first time since March 28th. The Cherry Bombs, a ruthless bunch of Rock ‘N’ Roll misfits, look to counter the “taste-for-blood attitude” of the Putas Del Fuego. Doors open at 6pm with the action starting at 7pm. Since tickets are only $15, be sure to get there fast as seats fill up quickly.

#3 - The Harlem Globetrotters Bring Their World Tour Back to the Frank Erwin Center

On Sunday, April 11th, the Harlem Globetrotters bring their legendary basketball show back to the Frank Erwin Center. Tickets start as low as $15 and as high as $32 on the Frank Erwin Center’s web site - www.texasboxoffice.com - or at your local HEB. Although the Globetrotters make annual visits to Austin, you won’t want to miss tipoff at 3pm or you will have to wait until 2011 to see them again.

#2 - The Austin Stars’ Final Regular Season Home Game and Fan Appreciation Night

The Austin Stars look to finish their first regular season in Austin on Friday, April 9th as they face off against the Rockford Ice Hogs. Faceoff is at 7:30pm at the new Cedar Park Event Center off of 183A with a special treat: $1 hot dogs and $2 draft beers. You can visit the Stars at www.texasstarshockey.com to order tickets for Friday night’s game. However, if you miss the Stars on their Fan Appreciation Night, don’t worry, the Stars will continue their play at home during the 1st round of the American League Hockey Playoffs.

#1- The Austin Toros Open Their 2010 NBA D-League Playoffs

On Saturday, April 10th and Sunday, April 11th, the Austin Toros begin their quest to the NBA Developmental League Title. The Austin Toros, a 3 seed, will take on the Dakota Wizards, a 5 seed, in an 8-team tournament to crown an NBA D-League Champion. In this series, Games 2 and 3 are at home at the Convention Center in Downtown Austin. On Saturday, tipoff is at 7pm. However, if they win Game 1 Thursday night at 8pm in North Dakota and Game 2 on Saturday night, then Sunday night’s game is not necessary. Call ahead or visit the Austin Toros at www.austintoros.com for updates. If needed, Sunday’s tipoff is at 6:30pm at the Convention Center. On the season, Austin and Dakota have split as both teams have won and lost against each other.
