USA becomes Food Stamp Nation but is it sustainable?

7:29 am by admin Leave a Comment

Genna Saucedo supervises cashiers at a Wal-Mart in Pico Rivera, California, but her wages aren't enough to feed herself and her 12-year-old son. Saucedo, who earns $9.70 an hour for about 26 hours a week and lives with her mother, is one of the many Americans who survive because of government handouts in what has rapidly become a food stamp nation.  Altogether, there are now almost 46 million people in the United States on food stamps, roughly 15 percent of the population. That's an … [Read more...]

With 16 Grammys, millions of records sold, several defining hits and a superstar husband, Beyonce has nothing to prove. But sometimes, even queens need to show what it means to be royalty. And on Sunday night, Beyonce arrived at the Roseland Ballroom to give fans and critics alike a reminder that she remains the head diva in the music world. She made her case to a select group of fans one rump-shaking move at a time. "This show is going to be a little different," Beyonce told the … [Read more...]

Tiger’s down, not out

12:41 pm by admin Leave a Comment

The kid standing behind 15-year-old Tiger Woods on the tee at Torrey Pines was two years older and already a hotshot himself on Southern California's rough-and-tumble amateur golf circuit the first time he saw the look. Chris Riley had played the skinny teenager with the growing reputation a dozen times before. This time, he was 2-up with seven holes to play in the prestigious Junior World Championship. "We were at No. 12, a long par 4 and I'd already hit mine 260 yards. He smoked … [Read more...]

Weight lifting helps smokers quit without weight gain

11:04 am by admin Leave a Comment

The researchers found that three months of pumping iron seemed to help curb cigarette cravings and withdrawal symptoms, while lessening the weight gain that sometimes accompanies quitting.  Overall, men and women who completed the resistance training program were twice as likely to kick the habit as smokers who didn't lift weights. "Cigarette smoking kills more than a thousand Americans every day, and while the large majority of smokers want to quit, less than 5 percent are able to do it … [Read more...]

3:43 pm by admin Leave a Comment

A panel of health experts on Wednesday emphasized technological innovations as a way to improve healthcare in rural areas, after a study showed problems in those regions could be aggravated by new laws. The study showed rural Americans already are more likely to suffer from chronic health conditions and face greater difficulty accessing quality healthcare than urban counterparts.  Patients in rural communities face greater rates of diabetes, heart problems and cancer but receive lower … [Read more...]

Aging boomers strain cities built for the young

5:17 pm by admin Leave a Comment

America's cities are beginning to grapple with a fact of life: People are getting old, fast, and they're doing it in communities designed for the sprightly. To envision how this silver tsunami will challenge a youth-oriented society, just consider that seniors soon will outnumber schoolchildren in hip, fast-paced New York City. It will take some creative steps to make New York and other cities age-friendly enough to help the coming crush of older adults stay active and … [Read more...]

Rihanna puts on a show

5:11 pm by admin Leave a Comment

Barbados-born beauty Rihanna isn't easy to forget. Without overly choreographed dance moves, her smoldering stare, powerful voice and swaggering strut are enough to captivate a packed house for nearly two hours. After Cee Lo Green suddenly backed out of the "Loud" tour due to a packed schedule, there were concerns over whether Rihanna and opener J.Cole could hold down the fort and keep ticket holders happy. Fans at the Staples Center on Tuesday hoping to rock out to an uncensored … [Read more...]

Book of Nelson Mandela quotations released

8:21 am by admin Leave a Comment

A new Nelson Mandela book, slim, bound in black and set in eye-straining type, looks a bit like a bible or a prayer book. That's fitting, because the editors of "Nelson Mandela By Himself" brought something close to religious zeal to the task of choosing and checking more than 2,000 quotations to ensure the world gets the anti-apartheid icon's words right. The book was released Monday — days after U.S. first lady Michelle Obama got an advance copy signed by Mandela when she met him during a … [Read more...]
