Cancer death rates are continuing to fall, but not all segments of the population are benefiting, the American Cancer Society said on Friday. Overall, the group predicts 1,596,670 new cancer cases in the United States and 571,950 deaths in 2011. Death rates for all cancer types fell by 1.9 percent a year from 2001 to 2007 in men and by 1.5 percent a year in women from 2002 through 2007. Steady overall declines in cancer death rates have meant about 898,000 who would have died … [Read more...]
Why we celebrate Juneteenth
Juneteenth is the oldest known celebration commemorating the ending of slavery in the United States. Dating back to 1865, it was on June 19th that the Union soldiers, led by Major General Gordon Granger, landed at Galveston, Texas with news that the war had ended and that the enslaved were now free. Note that this was two and a half years after President Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation - which had become official January 1, 1863. The Emancipation Proclamation had little impact on the … [Read more...]
Chronic pot smoking affects brain chemistry, scans show
Imaging scans show that chronic daily use of marijuana can have a detrimental effect on the brain, according to a new report. In the study, researchers revealed that chronic use of the drug caused a decrease in the number of receptors involved in a wide array of important mental and bodily functions, including concentration, movement coordination, pleasure, pain tolerance, memory and appetite. Marijuana, also known as cannabis, is abused more than any other illegal drug in America, according … [Read more...]
Hackers post phony Tupac story on PBS website
WASHINGTON – PBS officials say hackers have cracked the network's website, posting a phony story claiming dead rapper Tupac Shakur was alive in New Zealand, and a group that claimed responsibility for the hacking complained about a recent "Frontline" investigative news program on WikiLeaks. PBS confirmed Monday that the website had been hacked. The phony story had been taken down as of Monday morning. It had been posted on the site of the "PBS NewsHour" program, which is produced by WETA-TV … [Read more...]
CBS blasts back after Armstrong seeks apology
Lance Armstrong's lawyers sought an apology on Wednesday and instead received a rebuke from US television network CBS over a story on doping claims against the seven-time Tour de France winner. Attorney Elliot Peters denigrated last month's story on "60 Minutes", which centred on an interview with former Armstrong teammate Tyler Hamilton, in a letter to CBS News chairman Jeff Fager, the show's executive producer. "In the cold light of morning your story was either extraordinarily shoddy, … [Read more...]
When Oprah says goodbye, will she really be gone?
The sun will come out on Thursday. Bet your bottom dollar. Moreover, the Earth will almost certainly still be spinning on its axis. Even in Chicago, the city Oprah Winfrey is abandoning, life is pretty sure to continue as normal. Expect the pizza to be as tasty and the gusts off Lake Michigan to be as persistent on Thursday as they were the day before. This is not to say change isn't in the wind. As everybody knows, "The Oprah Winfrey Show" is ending Wednesday after a spectacularly … [Read more...]
Armstrong accuser says UCI covered up positive test
A former team mate of Lance Armstrong alleged on TV's "60 Minutes" on Sunday that cycling's world governing body had helped the seven-times Tour de France winner cover up a positive drugs test. Tyler Hamilton told the U.S. version of the show, broadcast on CBS television, that Armstrong had told him he tested positive for EPO (erythropoietin) during the 2001 Tour of Switzerland but escaped punishment after the International Cycling Union (UCI) intervened on his behalf. Armstrong has … [Read more...]
Apple has already won against android
The war between Apple and Android has supposedly been going on since the first Android handset, the T-Mobile G1, was rushed to market in 2008. But in fact, the two were never even fighting -- at least not directly. Because both Apple and Android are gaining market share, at the expense of things like RIM's BlackBerry. See, the fight was never between Apple and Android. The two of them were just racing to pick up as many "dumbphone" and featurephone users as possible, and upgrade them to … [Read more...]
Sony Online entertainment goes dark
First the Playstation Network, now all of Sony Online Entertainment has been taken offline in the wake of a fresh invasion by hackers. Citing an "issue that warrants concern," SOE made an announcement on Monday that it would be taking their servers offline for an unspecified length of time while they addressed the problem. Initially they did not say what the actual issue is that they discovered, but given that its sister service, the Playstation Network, has been offline for two weeks already … [Read more...]
Bin Laden story shows changing media nature
NEW YORK – A soldier in Afghanistan learned about the death of Osama bin Laden on Facebook. A TV producer in South Carolina got a tip from comedian Kathy Griffin on Twitter. A blues musician in Denver received an email alert from The New York Times. And a Kansas woman found out as she absently scrolled through the Internet on her smartphone while walking her dog. In an illustration of how the information world has changed, many people learned through media formats or devices that weren't … [Read more...]
